The Perfect End to a White Lake Day
If you come to the White Lake area for its beaches, its unique shops, its golf courses or for boating you have made a start for a perfect day. Stay the night at A Finch Nest Bed & Breakfast, and make the perfect ending to that perfect day.
We are in an 1868 Victorian Cottage, completely renovated, keeping the charm, but providing modern comfort. With us, you will have a private bath with both a whirlpool tub and a shower. Each room has a cable TV with VCR and DVD, and a broadband Internet connection for your laptop. Our library has many books and movies. At day's end you can relax on our front porch swing or in our garden and sip tea.
We are just a short walk from the lake, a 25 mile bike path, many restaurants, the Howmet Playhouse and other entertainment.
Our breakfast features freshly squeezed juice, freshly laid eggs and freshly baked breads.
Victorian Charm ~ Modern Conveniences
White Lake's newest bed and breakfast is in one of its oldest homes. A Finch Nest is in an 1860s Victorian cottage built by O. Wayne Gonzalez. Mr. Gonzalez purchased the lot from lumber baron Charles Mears, who laid out and subdivided what is now the City of Whitehall.
Later, the house was owned for decades by the Williams family, and was one of the town's social centers, hosting frequent parties. When the White Lake Leather Company purchased it, it was used as a residence for its executives. It then reverted to private family occupancy and began to suffer from the accumulated years. Helen Fink, a retired schoolteacher, purchased the property in 2002, with the plan to make it a bed and breakfast.
The Fink's Home
The reception area is a formal parlor quite suitable for visiting, drinking coffee with the paper, or just relaxing. The library contains light reading and a video library for use in the guests' rooms, as well as a wood-burning fireplace.
The centerpiece of the home is the dining room where guests breakfast around a large formal table. Fresh coffee and tea are available 24 hours a day. The breakfasts are ample and savory and always fresh. Bread is baked on the premises, and guests frequently awaken to the smell of bread baking.
Helen and Andy (her assistant, bread baker, attorney, and husband of 45 years) reside in the former servants' quarters in the attached carriage house. Finch is the English word for Fink; hence, A Finch Nest is a place where the Finks make their home.
Renovations
Extensive, careful interior upgrading has resulted in a comfortable and modern home true to its Victorian flavor. Floors in the living areas, bedrooms and bathrooms are beautiful maple and oak.
The furniture was collected by Helen and her husband during the many months they lived in temporary quarters while the renovation was underway. Each room has a unique charm that gives the guest a Victorian mood without sacrificing modern comforts. The guestrooms have TV, VCR & DVD. All rooms have a private bath containing a whirlpool tub as well as a modern shower stall. The Gold Room has a tub for two.

Victorian Guest Rooms and Bathrooms
A Finch Nest does not compromise on the comfort of the guest room baths. Too often, the bathroom spoils an otherwise charming bed and breakfast experience. Most are not well equipped. Many establishments have shoe-horned the bath into a closet or a corner of the bedroom.
A Finch Nest gives the guests a bedroom bathroom combination not found in B&Bs. Pedestal sinks give a Victorian flavor. Hardwood floors continue the theme. The room decor gives charming utility, with plenty of shelf space for the guests to set their toiletries.
Modern showers with fast flowing instant hot water and large shower heads give a superior bathing experience. Soft terry cloth robes are available for post-bath lounging.
You will find a selection of soaps and other toiletries for your enjoyment.

More than a Place to Sleep
A Finch Nest bed and breakfast is more than a place to sleep. Just as hotels are useful venues for large conferences, A Finch Nest is a useful place to hold a small meeting. Our dining room seats 10 comfortably around the table, and can easily hold twice that number for presentations. In addition, our parlor and library are quite handy for even smaller meetings or for a place for one side to huddle in private during business negotiations.
Helen Fink, proprietor, notes that "because we are a bed and breakfast, coffee and tea, and cookies or light pastry are always available. With as little as one days warning we can have sandwiches, cakes, Danishes or anything the guests' desire.
Please contact us the next time you need a place for business negotiations or a small presentation room.
